Who are those Samis?

Our people is known in the European tradition as Laplanders - some even call us the Happy Little Laplanders working in the mountains with their reindeers, singing in the mid-night sun and causing no harm. I am proud for that our people somehow are the carriers of the myth of joyfulness and happiness. However we do not call ourselves Laplanders any more, and we dont like to be called that either. We call ourselves Samis, and we like to be called Samis. The cause is that the Laplander naming carries so much pain from times when we were heavily discriminated politically, culturally, socially and economically. We dont like to stand on the stage of world and appear as victims. Therefor we work hard to preserve, maintain, develope and promote our culture.
